All about scaling and root planing
Scaling and Root Planing are the methods of deep cleaning below gum lines that are used to treat gum diseases. Gum diseases are basically caused by a film of sticky bacterias known as plaque. They can be removed easily by maintaining daily hygiene routines. But in case they are not cleaned well, it leads to gum inflammation. The inflammation in turn will pull away from the gums from your teeth forming small spaces called pockets. When the plaque gets trapped into these pockets, you will not be able to remove them easily and hence will need a visit to the dentist. If left untreated, it can even lead to bone and teeth loss.
The procedure and aftercare
The process is divided into two parts. Scaling is when the plaque and the tartar is removed from above and below the gumline, till the very end of the gum pockets. Root Planing will be performed after this in which your dentist will re-attach the gums to your teeth. The whole process will take more than one visit to complete.
Once the process is completed, you might face some pain and teeth sensitivity for up to a week. Your gums might also remain swollen and feel tender for a few days.
